When was the Church started to be called “Catholic” ?

The word Catholic comes from the Greek katholikos, the combination of two Greek words: kata, which means concerning, and holos, which means wholeconcerning the whole; sometimes it is also translated to mean, universal.
The word “catholic,” was first used in the earliest writings of Saint Ignatius of Antioch in 107 AD, only a few decades after the Gospel of John was written in 90 AD. Saint Ignatius was sentenced to death by lions in the Roman Coliseum. As he was being escorted to Rome he wrote a famous series of letters to different Churches.
In his letter to the Church at Smyrna, ch. 8.2  he wrote;
Let no man do anything connected with the Church without the bishop. The celebration of the Eucharist is valid only if it is administered by the bishop or by one to whom he has entrusted it. Where the bishop is, there let the people also be; just as where Jesus Christ is, there is the Catholic Church.”
(The Apostolic Fathers: Greek Texts and English Translations of Their Writings, 2nd. ed., The Letters of Ignatius, To the Smyrnaeans, Chapter 8.2 (Grand Rapids: Baker Book House, 1992), pp. 189 & 191.

The fact that Saint Ignatius uses the word “catholic” without explaining what he meant has lead scholars to believe that the appellation, Catholic Church, may have been in use as early as the second half of the first century. Since the time Saint Ignatius used the word “Catholic” and, most probably, well before that, the term Catholic has been used to distinguish between the Church that Jesus established – the universal Church – from the splinter groups that have broken away. It is true that we can read in the Acts of the Apostles that the early followers of Christ at Antioch became known as "Christians" (cf. Acts 11:26).However, in the New Testament, the name Christian was never commonly applied to the Church herself, it is simply called "the Church." There was only one Church. In that early time there were not yet any break-away bodies substantial enough to be rival claimants of the name and from which the Church might ever have to distinguish itself. However, during the early period in post-apostolic times, the Church did acquire a proper name-and precisely in order to distinguish itself from rival bodies which by then were already beginning to form. And the name that the Church acquired when it became necessary for it to have a proper name was the name by which she has been known ever since-the Catholic Church.
Moreover, mention of the name Catholic Church became more and more frequent in the written record. It appears in the oldest written account we possess outside the New Testament of the martyrdom of a Christian for his faith, the "Martyrdom of Saint Polycarp," bishop of the same Church of Smyrna to which St. Ignatius of Antioch had written. Saint Polycarp was martyred around 155 AD, and the account of his sufferings dates back to that time. The narrator informs us that in his final prayers before giving up his life for Jesus Christ, Saint Polycarp "remembered all who had met with him at any time, both small and great, both those with and those without renown, and the whole Catholic Church throughout the world." We know that Saint Polycarp, at the time of his death in 155 AD, had been a Christian for 86 years. He could not, therefore, have been born much later than 69 or 70. Yet it appears to have been a normal part of the vocabulary of a man of this era to be able to speak of "the whole Catholic Church throughout the world."
We would like to reiterate that the term "catholic" simply means "universal," and when employing it in those early days, Saint Ignatius of Antioch and Saint Polycarp of Smyrna were referring to the Church that was already "everywhere," as distinguished from whatever sects, schisms or splinter groups might have grown up here and there, in opposition to the Catholic Church. The term was already understood even then to be an especially fitting name because the Catholic Church was for everyone, not just for adepts, enthusiasts or the specially initiated who might have been attracted to her. Again, it was already understood that the Church was "catholic" because she possessed the fullness of the means of salvation. She also was destined to be "universal" in time as well as in space, and it was to her that applied the promise of Christ to Peter and the other apostles that "the powers of death shall not prevail" against her (Mt 16:18).
So the name Catholic became attached to the Church for good. By the time of the first ecumenical council of the Church, held at Nicaea in Asia Minor in the year 325 A.D., the bishops of that council were legislating quite naturally in the name of the universal body they called in the Council of Nicaea's official documents "the Catholic Church." As most people know, it was that same council which formulated the basic Creed in which the term "catholic" was retained as one of the four marks of the true Church of Christ. And it is the same name which is to be found in all 16 documents of the twenty-first ecumenical council of the Church, Vatican Council II. In the Creed which we recite on Sundays and holy days speaks of one, holy, catholic and apostolic Church. As everybody knows, however, the Church referred to in this Creed is more commonly called just the Catholic Church.
"The Church is catholic because she proclaims the fullness of the faith. She bears in herself and administers the totality of the means of salvation. She is sent out to all peoples. She speaks to all men. She encompasses all times. She is 'missionary of her very nature." (“The Catechism of the Catholic Church”, no. 868).

Does the True Church Founded by Jesus Christ Was Apostatized ?

“Adherents hold that Iglesia ni Cristo is the only true church of Jesus Christ as restored by Felix Manalo. The church recognizes Jesus Christ as the founder of the Church. Meanwhile, its reestablishment is seen as the signal for the end of days.[2][18][20] For example, its founding in July 27, 1914 coincides with the beginning of World War I.[32] They believe that the church was apostatized by the 1st[23] or 4th century due to false teachings.[21][35] The INC says that this apostate church is the Roman Catholic Church.” (“Wikipedia – The Free Encyclopedia”, www.en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Iglesia_ni_Cristo)
Is it true that the Church established by the Lord Jesus Christ on 33 AD in Jerusalem was totally apostatized during the first or fourth century; and this apostatized Church is now known as “The Roman Catholic Church”? My answer is that “This is not true – it’s a big lie” – a blasphemy against God, of which only a person obsessed by the devil has a gust to do that to God. Before we start our sharing, it is probably a good idea to define what apostasy is. The Catholic Church defines Apostasy as the complete and voluntary abandonment of the Christian religion, whether the apostate embraces another religion such as Paganism, Judaism, Mohammedanism, etc., or merely makes profession of Naturalism, Rationalism, etc.” A heretic person is different from an apostate person; a heretic only denies one or more of the doctrines of a revealed religion, whereas the apostate denies the religion itself, a sin which has always been looked upon as one of the most grievous. Webster Dictionary defines Apostasy as 1: renunciation of a religious faith  2: abandonment of a previous loyalty : DEFECTION.
My sharing will be more on a layman’s point of view, I am not a theologian so to say. Catholics firmly hold and believe that the true Church founded by Jesus Christ will never be totally apostatized and be converted into a church managed by Satan. Why? It is because Jesus Christ has promised that his Church will never be overcome by any satanic powers. “And I tell you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build MY CHURCH, and the GATES OF HADES will NOT OVERCOME IT.” Matthew 16:18 . Do you believe when Jesus Christ said “the gates of Hades will not overcome my Church”? Do these words of the Lord had another meaning that need an interpretation from an honored bible exegete? In this verse, we are taught that this particular Church which he has established belongs to him and no such powers that can overcome this Church in any manner and in any time, or else he would have said that “my church will be overcome by Hades in a little while then it will be revived afterwards”. But rather, it simply states that no such power can overcome his Church. Do you know why? Let us cite at least some three reasons from the Bible. 1.) “16. And I will ask the Father, and he will give another Counselor to be WITH YOU FOREVER- 17. the Spirit of Truth. The world cannot accept him, because it neither sees him nor knows him. But you know him, for he lives with you and will be in you.” John 14:16-17. It is God the Father himself who will give the HOLY SPIRIT to stay with this Church FOREVER. Do you understand that verse – what does forever means ? Can you imagine, it is God himself sending the Holy Spirit to the Church – can there be such any power to suppress what God has done. Can there be any power to overthrow the Holy Spirit away from the Church? Now, if that will be the case, what kind of God have we – a weakling God? Precisely, how can Satan overcome the Church if the Holy Spirit himself remains in the Church FOREVER. It was the same Holy Spirit that strengthen the martyrs of early Church to die for the faith but never give up to the whims of Satan, never, never, never. 2.)”I am the Living One; I was dead, and behold I am alive forever and ever! And  I HOLD THE KEYS OF DEATH AND HADES.” Revelation 1:18  This verse says that Jesus Christ hold the keys – meaning to say he has the POWER – over death and Hades, so if he has power over death and Hades – how can these powers overcome the Church - which in fact this Church was not only owned by Jesus Christ but was purchased with his own blood? Do you mean to say that Satan is more powerful than Jesus Christ that why he can convert the Church into his own and put it under his dominion? It is a great insult to the Lord and Savior to believe that such kind of satanic teaching, and it really made me furious to hear about that. 3.) Jesus Christ has promised before he ascended to heaven, “and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I WILL BE WITH YOU ALWAYS, TO THE VERY END OF THE AGE”.  Matthew 28:20. What does this verse convey to us? – “I will be with you ALWAYS – until the END OF THE AGE” – does this needs an official interpretation from a learned Bible scholar? These three scriptural references revealed to us an important truth - that the true Church founded by Jesus Christ in Jerusalem way back 33 AD can never be overcome by whatsoever power that proceeds from Satan; the Church cannot - in any manner or at any time – be APOSTATIZE because the Holy Spirit remains within the Church ALWAYS and FOREVER until the second advent of Jesus Christ.
So, now we have two choices whether whom shall we believe: those who teaches that the True Church founded by Jesus Christ was apostatized in the first century; or the Lord Jesus Christ who said that his Church cannot be overcome by the gates of Hades? These two claimers are saying two different contradicting things; if one of them is true then the other one is false. Who of them is telling the truth? Well I can assure you from the Bible that it is Jesus Christ who is telling the truth:”21.To this you were called, because Christ suffered for you, leaving you an example, that you should follow in his steps. 22. He committed no sin, and no DECEIT WAS FOUND IN HIS MOUTH.” 1 Peter 2:21-22. Therefore, if Jesus Christ is telling us the truth then it follows then that our detractors are telling a lie – they are liars. And what does the Bible says about liars, “You belong to your father, the devil, and you want to carry out your father’s desire. He was a murderer from the beginning, not holding the truth, for there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks his native language, for he is a LIAR and the FATHER OF LIES.” John8:44. I don’t have any personal quarrel with them, at any rate, they will be responsible for their actions and accountable to God for all the souls they had led astray. Friends, thank you very much for the time you spared with me. I will really appreciate if you could join me in spreading our Catholic Faith to others in a simplest way that our heart can afford, maybe it’s a song, a poem, a reflection, an insight, a faith experience, a joy in giving etc. God bless us all.

What does the word Church means?

The Apostles' Creed is the summary of our Catholic Faith as it was taught by the apostles by the Lord Jesus Christ; in Article 9 it proclaims: "I believe in ....the Holy, Catholic Church, the communion of saints."  Here, we Catholics  express our belief that Jesus Christ has founded only One True Church, the Holy Catholic Church. This means that all these Christian sects and denominations were not founded by Jesus Christ. Although these groups claimed that their particular church is the true church founded by Jesus Christ directly or through prophecy, and they also claimed that all their teaching came directly from the Bible. Though these groups hold that the Bible must be the sole basis of all teachings and doctrines, yet all of them differ and contradict each other in matter of teachings and doctrines and religious practices.
Now to begin with, let us explained first the meaning of the word "church" as it is used in the New Testament. Many people believe that a Church is a building, a house of worship where anyone goes every Sunday to participate at the Holy Mass, or a Worship Services, or any form of worshipping God. However, we will discuss here, about the Church in the context of New Testament. So, we can read in Ephesians 5:23 "For the husband is the head of the wife as Christ is the head of the CHURCH, his BODY, of which he is the Savior." Also in Colossians 1:18 "And he (Christ) is the head of the BODY, the CHURCH;...." The apostle Paul when he uses the word Church he is referring to the Church - as the body of Christ and Christ himself is the head of that body. What kind of body Paul is referring to? definitely the verse was not referring to the physical body of Christ. In 1 Cor. 12:12-13, 27 "12.The body is a unit, though it is made up of many parts; and though all its parts are many, they form one body. So it is with Christ. 13. For WE ARE ALL BAPTIZED by one Spirit INTO ONE BODY - whether Jews or Greeks, slaves or free - and we were all given the one Spirit to drink. 27 Now YOU ARE THE BODY OF CHRIST, and each one of you is a part of it." So the body of Christ refers to all the baptized believers and not to the physical body of Christ. Therefore, the Church is the body of Christ - a group of all baptized believers and a person can become a part of the Church through baptism. The New Testament was written in Greek, and the Greek word for the church is “ekklesia” a combination of two Greek words “ek” which means “out of” and “kalein” which means “to call”; so the etymological or the literal meaning of the word “ekklesia” is “called out ones” or “called out assembly” -so for Christians ecclesia means an assembly of persons who were called out of darkness towards the marvelous light of God. “But you are a chosen people, a royal priest priesthood, a holy nation, a people belonging to God, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out darkness into his marvelous light.1 Peter 2:9   The Catholic Church defines Church as the Mystical Body of Christ - the congregation of all baptized persons united in one true faith and sharing the same sacraments under the authority of the Pope. What else do we know about the Church? Eph.4:4-5 "There is ONE BODY, and one Spirit -just as you were called to one hope - when you were called - 5 one Lord, one faith, one baptism," So there is only one body, meaning to say that there is only ONE CHURCH with one Lord, one faith and one baptism. This is very clear. This is in confirmation with the very words of Jesus Christ, John 10:16 "I have other sheep that are not of this pen. I must bring them also. They too will listen to my voice and there shall be ONE FLOCK, and ONE SHEPHERD." Also we can read in John 17:16b "...Holy Father, protect them by the power of your name - the name you gave me - so that they may be ONE as we are ONE.". So there is only one body of Christ - ONE TRUE CHURCH!!! But what do we find nowadays hundreds of churches claiming to be of Christ but they were contradicting and hurting each others?- which of these sects and denominations really belong to Jesus Christ? Are all of them founded by Jesus Christ? Is Christ divided into many Christian sects and denominations - remember that these groups were teaching different doctrines from one each other – are all of them teaching the Truth? But they were different from each other, so if one of them is teaching the Truth then the rest are not. History both secular and ecclesiastical has recorded and preserved the development of the true Church founded by Jesus Christ from her humble beginning in the first century up to the present time. No matter how good explanations our detractors made to divert the history of the Church, the very fact of it can never be thwarted nor altered nor annihilate it. In our next sharing we will discuss about, "How sure are we that among these hundreds of Christians churches, "the Catholic Church is the True Church founded by Jesus Christ!". Friends I am inviting you to join me in this apostolate. Please feel free to share your comments, poems, songs, original compositions, questions and experiences that will help each one of us to grow, strengthen our faith as we wait for the coming of the Lord. Thank you for your patience. God bless us all!!!

Is It True that the Virgin Mary Was Conceived Without Sin?

Here is the official teaching of the Catholic Church:
"The Blessed Virgin Mary, in the first instance of her conception, by a singular grace and privilege granted by Almighty God, in view of the merits of Jesus Christ, the Savior of the human race, was preserved free from all stain of original sin." ( "Ineffabilis Deus", Pope Pius IX, December 8, 1854).
I can see no problem in this teaching, is it impossible for God to preserve the Virgin Mary from sin for the greatest purpose of salvation? This kind of  query comes from those who claimed to be biblical Christians who dislike the Virgin Mary instead of honoring for being the mother of our Savior Jesus Christ. If they do believe in the bible sincerely and faithfully I am quite sure they will appreciate and love the mother of Jesus Christ, like those some Lutheran brethren who have gone back to the arms of the Virgin Mary. What is our basis of  believing the immaculate conception of the Virgin Mary? I would like to share my knowledge about the matter in a layman's point of view (because I am not a theologian) it's my strong desire to help that compels to do this. For me it is as this...let's open our bible to Hebrews 10:5 "Therefore, when CHRIST came into the world, he said: "Sacrifice and offering you did not desire, but a BODY YOU PREPARED FOR ME." In this verse Christ revealed to us that his Father had prepared a body for him..let me emphasize the word "prepared". God has prepared the incarnation of his son, why there was a need of such preparation? It is easy for God to destroy Satan and his power and it is very easy for him to become a human being without being born by a woman. What was the possible problem in the incarnation of Christ that it need a preparation? We read in Romans 5:12  "Therefore, just as sin entered into the world through one man, and death through sin, and in this way death came to ALL MEN, because ALL SINNED." So the problem was that sin has entered humanity and also death along with it. if Christ will become man like he will be infected with sins and in that disqualify himself as the Savior of mankind since he himself is a sinner. The Virgin Mary was chosen beforehand by God to be the mother of God. Was the Virgin Mary included in a sinful human race? The apostle Paul writes to the Christians in Rome, "10.As it is written:There is NO ONE righteous, NOT EVEN ONE. 21. for ALL have sinned and fall short of the glory of God." Romans 3:10, 21. So this is our Catholic belief about the Virgin Mary: "Mary BELONGED to the sinful human race. She therefore stood IN NEED OF REDEMPTION. The fact that she did not actually incur original sin is NOT DUE to HER action BUT CHRIST'S......Christ ALONE is the Redeemer of ALL. MARY then, WAS REDEEMED BY HIM. Her redemption , however, like the rest of her role in God's plan was UNIQUE. Christ's did not take away His mother's sin, for she had none, rather by His redemptive mercy He KEPT HER from incurring sin, so that she was conceive without original sin and was guarded by his grace against falling into sin" ("Teaching of Christ", Ronald Lawler, OFM, Our Sunday Visitor, Inc., Huntington, Indiana, 1976, p.235). I hope that this teaching is clear to us, Mary was without sin because CHRIST HAS PRESERVED HER FREE FROM SIN BEFORE SHE WAS PUT IN HER MOTHER'S WOMB - this is in view of the incarnation of Christ. Mary was redeemed by Christ like us, the only difference was the manner how we were redeemed. Her redemption is more on preserving her free from sin so that the son that will be born from her would be without sin also - so there was a really need for preparation. To enlighten us more on this matter let us take a look on Job14:1, 4 "1. Man born of a woman is of few days and full of trouble...4. Who CAN BRING WHAT IS PURE FROM THE IMPURE? NO ONE". Can we get something clean from what is filthy? This verse connotes that if the Virgin Mary is IMPURE the son that will be born to her is also IMPURE, isn't it? This is the very reason why the Virgin Mary was redeemed by her Son before she was conceived in her mother's womb. How is it possible to sanctify Mary inside the womb of her mother? We can be assured a positive response to that, let's read Jeremiah 1:5 "BEFORE I formed you in the WOMB I knew you, BEFORE you were BORN I SANCTIFIED YOU, a prophet to the nations I appointed you." Is it impossible for God to sanctify the woman that will give birth to his only son? If God has sanctified Jeremiah in his mother's womb before he was born, it is not a big thing for God to do the same to the Virgin Mary. but HOW CAN WE BE SURE that the Virgin Mary was without sin? It's simple, let's read Matthew 12:33 "Make a tree good and its fruit will be good, or make the tree bad and its fruit will be bad, FOR A TREE IS RECOGNIZED BY ITS FRUIT." do you believe what that verse says? Well, can you recall a part of a Catholic prayer "Hail Mary" which says.."...and blessed is the FRUIT OF YOUR WOMB, JESUS". Jesus Christ is fruit of the womb of the Virgin Mary..." and as we have learned from Job14:4 "who can bring what is PURE from the IMPURE? NO ONE." do you believe what this verse says? What kind of fruit is JESUS who was born of the Virgin Mary? the answers are loud and clear read in Hebrews 4:15 "For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who has been tempted in every way, just as we are - yet was WITHOUT SIN." and also read 1 John 3:5 "But you know that he appeared so that he might take away our sins. AND IN HIM IS NO SIN." Anong klaseng bunga si Jesus Christ ? Jesus is WITHOUT SIN - the FRUIT OF MARY'S WOMB IS WITHOUT SIN - so therefore, this means that MARY IS ALSO WITHOUT SIN because they both have the same flesh and blood...WHY?...the Virgin Mary conceived without the intercession of man. Subalit kapag nagpumilit pa rin sila at sasabihin nila na: "HINDI NAMAN MABABASA SA BIBLIA NG LETRA POR LETRA NA SI MARIA AY WALANG KASALANAN KAYA HINDI SILA MANINIWALA" Ang isasagot natin sa kanila ay NGA-NGA...God bless you my friends, I hope that this humble contribution of mine may help you to enhance your Catholic faith as we growth in love, grace  and mercy of the Almighty God.

I
